Assoc. Prof. Serap Şahin Önder, MD

Assoc. Prof. Serap Şahin Önder, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. Her clinical work covers ear, nose and throat conditions in both children and adults, including tonsil and adenoid surgery, nasal and sinus surgery, septoplasty and septorhinoplasty, rhinoplasty, pediatric hearing loss, dysphagia, pharyngitis, cholesteatoma surgery and prominent ear correction. She has more than 16 years of experience in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2018.

Dr. Önder graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2010 and worked as a general practitioner at the Ministry of Health Sinop Gerze Community Health Center from 2010 to 2011. She completed her residency in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at İstanbul Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital between 2011 and 2015. She then served as a specialist doctor at the Ministry of Health Amasya Suluova State Hospital from 2015 to 2016 and at İstanbul Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital from 2016. In 2019 she trained at the CHUV Lausanne University Hospital Pediatric ENT and Airway Diseases Clinic in Switzerland. She is a member of the Turkish Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Association, the İstanbul Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Specialists Association, the European Society of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology and the Pediatric Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Association. Her published work includes studies on pediatric septoplasty, pediatric tracheotomy, balloon laryngoplasty for pediatric subglottic stenosis, congenital midnasal stenosis and the effects of allergic rhinitis in children.

Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Önder’s practice involves pediatric ENT care. She evaluates and treats children with pediatric hearing loss, pharyngitis and enlarged tonsils or adenoids, and performs tonsil surgery and adenoid surgery when these are indicated. She also assesses dysphagia (swallowing difficulty), which may have a range of underlying causes and is evaluated on an individual basis.

In nasal and sinus surgery, Dr. Önder performs septoplasty for a deviated nasal septum, septorhinoplasty when both function and shape of the nose are addressed, and rhinoplasty. Her ear surgery practice includes cholesteatoma surgery and prominent ear correction. The suitability of any procedure is determined after clinical examination and a review of the patient’s history and imaging.

How Dr. Önder works with international patients

Dr. Önder consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling, although a final assessment and treatment plan generally require an in-person examination.
