Serkan Gelmez, MD

Serkan Gelmez, MD is a radiology specialist in the Radiology unit at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 28 years of experience in medicine. Dr. Gelmez completed his medical degree at Marmara University in 1998. He then undertook specialty training in radiology at Ondokuz Mayis University Faculty of Medicine, completing it in 2005. Since then, his practice has covered a broad range of diagnostic radiology, from general imaging to more specific areas such as musculoskeletal, abdominal, neuroradiology and breast imaging.

Clinical focus

Dr. Gelmez performs and interprets diagnostic ultrasound examinations, including Doppler ultrasound studies, which are used to assess blood flow in vessels and organs. He interprets computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging studies and evaluates chest X-rays. Because imaging findings need to be considered together with the patient’s history, symptoms and earlier results, his reports are intended to be read alongside the clinical picture provided by the referring physician rather than in isolation.

His areas of expertise also include musculoskeletal imaging of bones, joints and soft tissues; abdominal imaging; and neuroradiology imaging of the brain and spine. In breast imaging, he works with mammography and related imaging methods. When a tissue sample is needed to clarify an imaging finding, Dr. Gelmez performs ultrasound-guided biopsy, in which real-time ultrasound is used to direct the needle to the area of concern. Whether a biopsy or additional imaging is appropriate depends on the individual findings and is decided together with the referring clinical team, so not every finding leads to further procedures.

How Dr. Gelmez works with international patients

International patients seen by Dr. Gelmez are supported by the Acibadem international patient team, which coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries. The team also arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. In radiology in particular, having earlier images available is helpful, because new findings can then be compared with previous studies and changes over time can be assessed. Interpreters can be arranged for patients who need language support during their visit.
