Sevim Kuyumcu, MD

Sevim Kuyumcu, MD is an ophthalmologist with more than 30 years in medicine. Her clinical work centers on neuro-ophthalmology, the field concerned with visual disorders arising from neurological disease, together with selected inflammatory eye conditions and the management of problems that may follow cataract surgery. She joined Acibadem Health Group in 2025 and works within the Ophthalmology unit.

Dr. Kuyumcu graduated from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1996. She then trained at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital Eye Clinic (1996–1997) and at Istanbul Göztepe SSK Eye Clinic (1997–2002). From 2005 to 2007 she took part in the Neuroophthalmology Special Student Program at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Norological Sciences, and in 2006 she was an International fellow in Neuro-ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia. In 2010–2011 she served as Dr. Faculty Member in Ophthalmology at Near East University / Faculty of Medicine. She worked at Ankara Ulucanlar Eye Training and Research Hospital from 2011 to 2024 and at Pine and Sakura City Hospital Eye Clinic Istanbul from 2024 to 2025. Dr. Kuyumcu is a member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association, the Istanbul Medical Chamber and the Turkish Medical Association, and she serves on the TOD Neuro-ophthalmology unit executive committee as education representative.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kuyumcu’s listed areas of expertise include visual disorders arising from neurological disease, peripheral visual field loss, pediatric neuro-ophthalmic diseases, toxic optic neuropathy and toxic retinal damage. She has a particular interest in pupillary function: her areas of expertise include migraine with aura-associated pupillary dysfunction, diabetic pupillary sympathetic denervation and topical apraclonidine testing, a pharmacological test used in the assessment of pupillary sympathetic innervation.

Her practice also covers inflammatory eye disease, including ocular Behçet disease and multiple sclerosis-associated panuveitis, as well as postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery and intraocular lens exchange. Dr. Kuyumcu has co-authored 10 listed publications dated between 2005 and 2022. Their subjects include pupillary balance in migraine patients with aura, methanol-induced toxic optic nerve and retinal damage in rats, the clinical and demographic characteristics of childhood neuro-ophthalmology diseases at a tertiary eye care center, panuveitis in multiple sclerosis, surgical indications and clinical results of intraocular lens exchange, peripheral field loss, rimexolone versus prednisolone acetate after cataract surgery, topical apraclonidine testing in diabetic patients, and serum leptin in Behçet’s disease with ocular involvement.

How Dr. Kuyumcu works with international patients

Dr. Kuyumcu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
