Prof. Ufuk Topuz, MD

Prof. Ufuk Topuz, MD is an anesthesiology specialist in the Anesthesiology & Reanimation unit at Acibadem Taksim Hospital in İstanbul. He graduated from Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and completed his specialty training in Anesthesiology and Reanimation at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2008, having worked as a research assistant in the same department from 2003 to 2008. Between 2001 and 2003 he served as a school physician at TED Bursa Koleji. He has more than 25 years in medicine.

From 2009 to 2011, Dr. Topuz worked as a specialist physician at İstanbul Mehmet Akif Ersoy Chest, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital. In 2011 he joined the Anesthesiology and Reanimation Department of Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine as an assistant associate professor. During his years there he also held academic and coordination responsibilities, including Organ Transplant Coordinator at Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine Hospital (2013–2014), Faculty Board Assistant Associate Professor Representative (2012–2015) and, at the Bezmialem Vakıf University, Vocational School of Health Services, Assistant Coordinator of the Department of Anesthesia and coordinator of the Erasmus and Farabi exchange programs (2014). He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2015. He is a member of the Turkish Anesthesiology and Reanimation Association, the European Society for Paediatric Anaesthesiology, the Turkish Intensive Care Association and the Chest, Cardiovascular Anesthesia and Intensive Care Association. He has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics such as opioid-free total intravenous anesthesia for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, recruitment maneuvers during general anesthesia for laparoscopic surgery, venous port implantation in pediatric patients and airway maneuvers during pediatric flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy.

Clinical focus

The clinical work of Dr. Topuz covers anesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive care. A central part of his practice is perioperative anesthesia: assessing patients before surgery, planning the anesthetic approach and monitoring the patient during and after the procedure. His areas of expertise also include pediatric anesthesiology, where anesthetic care is adapted to the needs of children undergoing surgery or diagnostic procedures.

He has particular experience in cardiothoracic anesthesia, including anesthesia for thoracic surgery, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. These settings require close coordination with the surgical team and careful monitoring of breathing and circulation throughout the operation. The specific anesthetic plan is decided individually after the patient's medical history, current condition and planned procedure have been reviewed.

How Dr. Topuz works with international patients

Dr. Topuz speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who need them. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient's history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options, including how anesthesia may be planned for a proposed procedure. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling.
