Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın

Prof. Dr. Yunus Aydın is a neurosurgeon at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Neurosurgery unit. With more than 49 years in medicine, his work covers both cranial and spinal neurosurgery. His clinical interests include brain aneurysms, brain tumors, meningiomas, hydrocephalus, tethered cord syndrome, spinal and spinal cord tumors, lumbar and cervical spinal canal stenosis, and lumbar and cervical disc herniation.

Dr. Aydın graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1977 and completed his neurosurgery training at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, in 1982. He worked at Şişli Etfal Hospital between 1986 and 1988 and joined Taksim Training and Research Hospital in 1989. In 1993 he was appointed professor at Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, and in 1994 he returned to Şişli Etfal Hospital. He has been with Acibadem Healthcare Services since 2006. Dr. Aydın is a member of the Turkish Neurosurgical Society and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS).

Clinical focus

On the cranial side, Dr. Aydın evaluates and treats patients with brain aneurysms, brain tumors and meningiomas. Tethered cord syndrome, a condition in which the spinal cord is abnormally attached within the spinal canal, is another part of his practice. In each case, the decision between observation, surgery or other management depends on the individual findings, imaging and the patient’s overall health.

On the spinal side, his work includes lumbar and cervical spinal canal stenosis, lumbar and cervical disc herniation, and spinal and spinal cord tumors. These conditions may present with back or neck pain, pain radiating into the arms or legs, numbness, weakness or difficulty walking. Assessment typically combines a neurological examination with a review of MRI or CT imaging. Whether a surgical approach is appropriate, and which one, is discussed with the patient after this evaluation, taking into account symptoms, imaging findings and any treatments already tried.

How Dr. Aydın works with international patients

Dr. Aydın consults in Turkish and English. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the exchange of medical reports and imaging before arrival and arranges appointments and, where needed, interpretation and logistical support. A first consultation usually covers the patient’s history and current symptoms, a neurological examination, and a review of previous imaging such as MRI or CT and any earlier operative or pathology reports.
