Prof. Dr. Yusuf Karakaş

Prof. Dr. Yusuf Karakaş is a medical oncologist in the Medical Oncology Department at Acibadem Bodrum Hospital in Muğla, Turkey. With more than 19 years in medicine, his clinical work centers on lung and other thoracic cancers, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer. He provides oncology care planned around the individual diagnosis and treatment needs of each patient.

Dr. Karakaş graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine (English-language program) in 2007. He completed his Internal Medicine training at Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2013 and his Medical Oncology training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2017. From 2017 to 2019 he worked at Hakkari State Hospital, and in 2019 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He is a member of Turkish Medical Oncology. His published work includes studies on tumor sidedness and prognosis in colorectal cancer, the effect of total lesion size on survival in multifocal/multicentric breast cancer, the prognostic value of the 2017 World Health Organization classification system for gastric neuroendocrine tumors, multimodality treatment in malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, an overview of Kaposi’s sarcoma, a review of advances in the management of pancreatic adenocarcinoma, and an evaluation of cancer types and prevalence in Hakkari Province.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karakaş sees patients with lung cancer and other thoracic cancers. His work in this area involves reviewing the diagnosis, staging information and previous treatments, and discussing systemic treatment planning and ongoing care with the patient. He also treats colorectal cancer, including colon cancer and rectal cancer, where medical oncology care is planned in relation to the location and stage of the disease and any prior surgery or other therapy.

A further area of his practice is breast cancer, a subject on which he has also published, including research on multifocal and multicentric disease and adjuvant hormone therapy. Across these conditions, his role as a medical oncologist is to assess the individual case, explain the options that may be appropriate, and follow the patient through treatment and follow-up.

How Dr. Karakaş works with international patients

Dr. Karakaş consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
