Can kids do an elimination diet?

That’s a genuinely useful result, not a failure. If you eliminated suspect foods faithfully for the full window and symptoms held steady, food probably isn’t the main driver. The next step is a medical visit to consider other explanations — celiac disease (which requires testing while still eating gluten), thyroid issues, medication side effects, or a functional gut disorder. A negative experiment that redirects you to the right specialist has done its job.
Is the low-FODMAP diet an elimination diet?
Yes — it’s arguably the best-evidenced one. It follows the same three-phase structure but targets fermentable carbohydrates (in foods like onions, garlic, wheat, milk, apples, and beans) rather than allergens, and it’s designed for irritable bowel syndrome. Trials show meaningful improvement in roughly half to three-quarters of people with IBS. The strict phase should stay temporary, since FODMAPs feed beneficial gut bacteria; most people reintroduce many of these foods successfully.
