What is blood alcohol content?
BAC expresses how much alcohol is circulating in your blood, as a percentage by volume. A BAC of 0.05% means 0.05 grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. Alcohol is absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream, distributed through the body’s water, and cleared — almost entirely by the liver — at a fairly fixed rate that no coffee, shower or willpower can speed up.
How to calculate BAC: the Widmark formula
Most blood alcohol calculators, including this one, are built on the Widmark formula, developed by the Swedish physician Erik Widmark:
BAC % = (alcohol consumed in grams ÷ (body weight in grams × r)) × 100 − (elimination rate × hours since drinking)
- r is the distribution ratio — the share of body mass that is water where alcohol distributes. Conventional averages are about 0.68 for men and 0.55 for women, which is why the same drinks typically produce a higher BAC in women.
- Elimination rate averages roughly 0.015% BAC per hour, though individuals range from about 0.010 to 0.020%.
The formula’s inputs are averages. Body composition, food in the stomach, drinking speed, medication and genetics all shift the real number — which is why two people can share a bottle of wine and blow very different readings.

Legal BAC limits around the world
Legal driving limits vary by country and by driver category, and they change — always confirm the current law where you are. As general orientation: many European countries set 0.05% for standard drivers, the United Kingdom (except Scotland) uses 0.08%, the United States uses 0.08% for drivers over 21, and a growing list of countries — including several in Eastern Europe and the Middle East — apply zero-tolerance limits of 0.00–0.02%, especially for new and professional drivers. Türkiye applies 0.05% for private drivers and zero tolerance for commercial drivers. None of this changes the practical rule: a calculator estimate is not a defence, and the only reliable way to stay legal is not to drive after drinking.
How long does alcohol stay in your system?
The liver clears alcohol at an average of about one standard drink per hour — roughly 0.015% BAC per hour. Nothing meaningfully accelerates it: not coffee, cold showers, exercise or sleep. Only time works. Typical clearance and detection windows:

The morning-after trap deserves emphasis: after a late, heavy night, your blood alcohol level can remain above legal limits well into the next day, long after you feel “fine”. Feeling sober and being sober are different measurements.

Factors that genuinely matter
- Body weight and composition — alcohol distributes in body water; smaller bodies and higher body-fat percentages concentrate it more.
- Sex — on average women reach higher BACs from the same intake due to body-water differences and stomach enzyme activity.
- Speed of drinking — the liver’s clearance rate is fixed; drinking faster than it clears stacks the rest in your blood.
- Food — a full stomach slows absorption and flattens the peak; it does not reduce the total absorbed.
- Medication — many common medicines interact with alcohol or slow its clearance; check labels and ask your pharmacist.

How alcohol moves through your body

A hangover is the morning invoice for several overlapping items: dehydration, acetaldehyde, sleep architecture wrecked by the rebound (REM suppressed, second half fragmented), stomach irritation and an inflammatory response. What measurably helps: water before bed and on waking, food, time — and prevention-side, slower drinking with food and clearer drinks (darker drinks carry more congeners, which correlate with worse mornings). What does not survive scrutiny: “hair of the dog” (postpones by re-intoxicating), miracle pills and IV-drip marketing. One caution with painkillers: paracetamol and a liver still processing alcohol are a poor pairing — if anything, food plus fluids first. Hangovers worsening with age is real: enzyme capacity and sleep resilience both decline.
What regular drinking does quietly
Beyond any single night’s BAC, pattern is what medicine cares about. The much-advertised “protective glass of red wine” has largely dissolved under better methodology. Tolerance: the trap dressed as a strength
“Handling your drink” is the most dangerous misread in drinking culture. Tolerance means your brain has adapted to show fewer signs at a given BAC — the blood level, the impairment of reaction time, and the damage to liver and heart are all completely unchanged. A tolerant drinker at 0.08% fails the same driving tasks as a novice at 0.08%; they just feel fine doing it, which makes them objectively more dangerous, not less. Rising tolerance also has a clinical meaning: it is one of the earliest, most reliable markers of developing dependence — needing more for the same effect is the definition, not a talent. How many drinks is 0.08%?
There is no safe universal answer — for a smaller person it can be as few as two to three drinks in an hour or two. That unpredictability is precisely why counting drinks is not a legal-safety strategy.
How long after drinking can I drive?

Why does alcohol wreck my sleep?
