Basal metabolic rate is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest in a neutral environment: the cost of being alive. It typically accounts for 60–70% of everything you burn in a day — more than most people’s exercise by a wide margin. The biggest driver is fat-free mass: organs and muscle are metabolically expensive tissue, which is why BMR differs so much between bodies of the same weight and why preserving muscle matters in every diet.

How to calculate BMR: the two standard equations

Mifflin-St Jeor equation (recommended)

Developed in 1990 and repeatedly validated as the most accurate standard prediction for modern adults:

  • Men: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5
  • Women: BMR = 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

Harris-Benedict equation (the classic)

Published in 1919 and revised in 1984, the Harris-Benedict equation remains widely used; it tends to estimate slightly higher than Mifflin-St Jeor for many adults:

  • Men: BMR = 88.362 + 13.397 × weight (kg) + 4.799 × height (cm) − 5.677 × age
  • Women: BMR = 447.593 + 9.247 × weight (kg) + 3.098 × height (cm) − 4.330 × age

Two patterns worth noticing: BMR declines gently with age (roughly 1–2% per decade after early adulthood, driven largely by muscle loss), and body size dominates — a bigger body simply costs more to run.

BMR vs RMR: is there a difference?

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is BMR’s practical cousin: measured under looser conditions (resting, but not the strict overnight-fasted laboratory protocol), it runs a few percent higher. In everyday use — and in most calculators — the terms are interchangeable; an RMR calculator and a BMR calculator will hand you essentially the same planning number.

BMR vs TDEE: which number do you plan with?

BMR is the floor; TDEE is the total. Multiply BMR by an activity factor (1.2 sedentary through 1.9 extremely active) and you get your total daily energy expenditure — the number meal plans are actually built on. Rules of thumb that keep plans sensible:

  • Chronic intakes at or below BMR are aggressive territory best supervised by professionals.
  • When a diet stalls, recheck TDEE — a lighter body has a lower BMR, so old targets quietly expire.
