The Navy and Army body fat method — how this calculator works

The U.S. Navy formula estimates body fat from circumferences: for men, waist and neck; for women, waist, hip and neck — combined with height. It exists because the military needed a fast, repeatable field standard, and validation studies put it within a few percent of laboratory methods for most body types. To measure correctly:

  • Waist — at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women, tape snug but not compressing, measured at the end of a normal exhale.
  • Neck — just below the larynx, tape sloping slightly downward at the front.
  • Hips (women) — at the widest point of the buttocks.
