What is FFMI?

The fat-free mass index relates your lean mass (everything that is not fat — muscle, bone, organs, water) to your height. It answers the question BMI cannot: is this weight muscle or fat? Two people can both weigh 90 kg at the same height; a 12% body fat athlete and a 30% body fat non-trainer will have wildly different FFMIs, and the number correctly identifies who carries the muscle.

The FFMI formula

Three steps, all done for you by the calculator:

  • Fat-free mass = weight × (1 − body fat %). A 90 kg person at 15% body fat carries 76.5 kg of fat-free mass.
  • FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) ÷ height (m)². At 1.80 m: 76.5 ÷ 3.24 = 23.6.
  • Normalized FFMI adds 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m), correcting the slight advantage shorter athletes have on the raw scale — this is the number used when comparing people.

Women average roughly 4–5 points lower at every level — an average untrained woman sits near 14–15, and elite natural female athletes around 19–21.

The natural limit: what the research actually found

The FFMI scale’s fame comes from a 1995 study that compared steroid-using and drug-free bodybuilders — including athletes from the pre-steroid era — and found the drug-free group topped out at a normalized FFMI of about 25, while users routinely exceeded it. That made 25 the popular “natty limit”. The honest reading: it is a strong statistical marker, not a law of physics — genetic outliers above 25 exist, and plenty of enhanced physiques sit below it. Treat scores above 25 as exceptional rather than impossible.

FFMI vs BMI

BMI classifies many muscular athletes as “overweight” because it cannot see composition. FFMI fixes exactly that — but it inherits the accuracy of your body fat estimate, so a poor body fat measurement produces a poor FFMI. Use both for what they are: BMI as a fast population screen, FFMI as the muscularity metric, and body fat percentage as the health metric.

How to raise your FFMI

There is only one honest path: progressive resistance training over years, adequate protein (1.6–2.2 g/kg — set it with our protein calculator) and patient nutrition (our macro calculator handles the split). Natural muscle gain is front-loaded: the first year of proper training may add 8–12 kg of lean mass for men; by year five, a kilogram a year is good going. Anyone promising fast points on this scale is selling something.

Exactly as accurate as the body fat percentage you enter. A ±4% error in body fat shifts FFMI by roughly a point — so use a consistent measurement method and track the trend.

What is a normal FFMI for women?

Untrained women typically score 14–16; well-trained female athletes reach 18–21. The commonly cited natural ceiling for women is around 21–22.

Does losing fat change FFMI?

Ideally very little — fat loss that preserves muscle leaves fat-free mass (and therefore FFMI) almost unchanged. A falling FFMI during a diet is the classic sign of losing muscle, usually from too little protein or too aggressive a deficit.
