What is normal blood pressure by age?
The honest answer surprises people: the targets do not officially rise with age. Guidelines apply the same categories to all adults, because the damage high pressure does — to heart, brain, kidneys and eyes — does not soften at 70. What does change with age is prevalence (stiffening arteries push systolic pressure up, so most people over 65 have some elevation) and treatment strategy, which balances targets against frailty and other medication. Average readings by decade exist as statistics; none of them are permission.
How to measure blood pressure at home
Home readings beat clinic readings for diagnosis — no white-coat effect — but only with proper technique:
- Sit quietly for 5 minutes first; back supported, feet flat, legs uncrossed.
- Cuff on a bare upper arm at heart level, correct cuff size (a too-small cuff reads high).
- No caffeine, exercise or smoking in the 30 minutes before; empty bladder.

Mean arterial pressure: the number behind the two
MAP — the average pressure driving blood into your organs across the whole heartbeat — is approximated as diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3. A 120/80 reading gives a MAP of about 93 mmHg; the typical healthy range is roughly 70–100. Clinicians lean on MAP in critical care; for home monitoring, the systolic/diastolic pair and its trend remain the numbers to know.
White-coat and masked hypertension: when the clinic lies
Two mirror-image phenomena make single clinic readings treacherous. White-coat hypertension — elevated in the clinic, normal at home — affects up to one in five people with high office readings; treating it as true hypertension medicates a stress response. Its dangerous twin, masked hypertension, reads normal in the clinic and high in real life — invisible at check-ups while doing full damage, and roughly as common. Once a year, take your device to an appointment and measure alongside the clinic’s — a few mmHg of drift is normal, large gaps mean recalibration.
