Ataeollah Moghtasad Azar works in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation unit at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. Clinical focus

A significant part of the work involves the rehabilitation of patients with neurological injury. In stroke rehabilitation, the aim is to support recovery of movement, balance and everyday function after a stroke, with the program adapted to the individual patient’s deficits and stage of recovery. Spinal cord injury rehabilitation addresses mobility, strength and functional independence according to the level and completeness of the injury. Spasticity assessment is used to document increased muscle tone that may follow such injuries and to inform the rehabilitation plan. Gait and balance evaluation and functional capacity assessment provide structured measures of how a patient walks, stands and performs daily activities, and they help to track change over time.

Musculoskeletal conditions are another area of clinical interest. These include low back pain, osteoarthritis management, rehabilitation after musculoskeletal injuries and post-surgical orthopedic rehabilitation following procedures on joints, bones or soft tissue. Electromyography and nerve conduction studies are used to evaluate the function of muscles and peripheral nerves when a nerve or muscle disorder is being considered. In each of these areas, the approach is to assess the patient’s current function, define realistic goals and follow progress through the course of rehabilitation. Outcomes vary between individuals and depend on the underlying condition, its severity and the patient’s overall health.

How Ataeollah Moghtasad Azar works with international patients

Before travel, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options, including whether a rehabilitation program is appropriate and what it might involve. Interpreters can be arranged for patients who do not share a common language with the clinical team, so that the assessment, the findings and the proposed plan can be discussed clearly and questions can be answered during the visit.
