Accepting international patientsAbout Prof. Ahmet Karabulut, MD
Prof. Ahmet Karabulut, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul. His clinical work centers on interventional cardiology, including coronary angiography, percutaneous coronary intervention, chronic total occlusion (CTO) intervention, transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and endovascular treatment, alongside the care of patients with coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, angina, myocardial infarction and heart failure.
Dr. Karabulut graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2000 and completed his cardiology residency at İstanbul Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery, Training and Research Hospital between 2000 and 2005. He subsequently worked at Balıkesir Asker Hospital and Şanlıurfa Balıklıgöl Devlet Hospital, and from 2006 to 2013 at Özel İstanbul Medicine Hospital. Between 2010 and 2012 he served part-time as Invasive Cardiology Supervisor at International Medicine Hospital Kosova, and in 2013 he held part-time night invasive cardiology supervisor roles at Medicana Bahçelievler Hospital and Küçükçekmece Doğan Hospital. He has been with Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2013. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association and the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI). His published work includes studies on left internal mammary artery function assessment, preinfarction angina and coronary artery ectasia, hospital length of stay after primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST elevation myocardial infarction, and case reports on coronary anomalies and acute coronary syndromes.
Clinical focus
A large part of Dr. Karabulut’s practice involves the diagnosis and catheter-based treatment of coronary artery disease. Coronary angiography is used to visualize the coronary arteries and to guide decisions about further treatment, which may include percutaneous coronary intervention. He also performs chronic total occlusion (CTO) intervention, a catheter-based approach for coronary arteries that have been completely blocked for an extended period, as well as endovascular treatment. Patients with atherosclerosis, angina or a history of myocardial infarction are assessed individually, and the suitability of any procedure depends on the findings of the clinical evaluation and imaging.
Dr. Karabulut’s expertise further includes transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), a catheter-based method of replacing the aortic valve, and the management of heart failure. In each case the aim is to establish the diagnosis, review the treatment options and discuss with the patient which approach is appropriate for their situation.
How Dr. Karabulut works with international patients
Dr. Karabulut consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling.
