Prof. Alper Kaya, MD

Prof. Alper Kaya, MD is a specialist in orthopedic surgery and traumatology at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are hip and knee replacement surgery and robotic surgery. Dr. Kaya has worked in medicine for more than 29 years and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2012. He holds the academic title of Associate Professor, awarded by Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine in 2011.

Dr. Kaya graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1997. He completed his specialty training in orthopedics and traumatology at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine, where he served as a research assistant from 1998 to 2003. He then worked as a specialist physician at Etimesgut State Hospital from 2003 to 2006, and as a Medical Lieutenant at TSK İskenderun Naval Hospital in 2004–2005. From 2006 he was a specialist physician at Ufuk University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, becoming Assistant Associate Professor in 2007 and Associate Professor in 2011. In 2008, he was a Visiting Research Fellow in knee surgery and arthroscopy at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Division of Sports Medicine, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. He is a member of the Turkish Orthopaedics and Traumatology Association, including its Arthroplasty and Orthopaedic Trauma branches, the Turkish Sports Injuries, Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, among others.

Clinical focus

Dr. Kaya’s clinical work centers on joint replacement of the hip and knee. He evaluates and treats patients with osteoarthritis, and performs knee replacement surgery and hip replacement surgery, including procedures carried out with robotic surgical systems. The suitability of any surgical approach is assessed on an individual basis, taking into account the patient’s condition, imaging findings, and general health.

A second area of his practice is sports medicine and sports traumatology. This includes knee and joint injuries such as cruciate ligament tears and meniscus tears. His published research reflects these interests and includes work on meniscus transplantation in ACL-deficient knees, the ultrastructural analysis of meniscus histology in osteoarthritic knees, and patellofemoral problems in total knee arthroplasty, as well as studies on trauma and spinal surgery.

How Dr. Kaya works with international patients

Dr. Kaya consults in Turkish and English. For patients traveling from abroad, the international patient team coordinates the transfer of medical reports and imaging before the visit and arranges appointment scheduling. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history, current symptoms, and previous treatments, a physical examination, and a review of any available X-rays, MRI scans, or prior operative reports. Where appropriate, further imaging or tests may be requested before treatment options are discussed. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to have an initial assessment or discuss existing reports before deciding whether to travel.
