Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ata Can

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ata Can is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology at Acibadem Taksim Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are hip and knee replacement surgery, foot and ankle surgery, and robotic surgery. He has more than 30 years in medicine and consults with patients in Turkish and English.

Dr. Can graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 1996 and completed his specialty training in Orthopedics and Traumatology at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2001. He then worked at Eyüp SSK Hospital from 2001 to 2007, at Halk Bahat Hospital from 2007 to 2008, and at Beylikdüzü Kolan Hospital from 2009 to 2010, before moving to Nişantaşı Orthopedics Center in 2010. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2017. He is a member of the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Association (TOTBID), the Artroplasti Association and the Turkish Medical Association (TBB). He has co-authored papers published in Acta Orthop Traumatol Turc, including work on total knee arthroplasty after osseous ankylosis of the knee joint, five-year results of endoscopic calcaneoplasty, and complications of femoral neck fractures in children operated on at least 24 hours after initial trauma.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Can’s practice is joint replacement. He performs hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery, and he also uses robotic surgery techniques where they are considered appropriate for the individual patient. In addition, he treats conditions of the foot and ankle, including surgical management when indicated.

His second area of focus is sports medicine and sports traumatology. He assesses and treats meniscus tears, muscle tears, and other knee and joint injuries, and he provides trauma care for orthopedic injuries. For each patient, the choice between conservative treatment and surgery depends on the clinical examination, the imaging findings and the person’s activity level and general health, and these factors are discussed before a plan is agreed.

How Dr. Can works with international patients

Dr. Can consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who prefer another language. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options, including whether surgery is likely to be appropriate. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel, for example to review imaging of a hip, knee, foot or ankle problem and to clarify what further assessment might be needed on arrival.
