Avi Karako, DDS

Avi Karako, DDS is a dentist practicing in the Dental & Oral Health unit at Acibadem Göktürk Outpatient Clinic in İstanbul. With more than 46 years in dentistry, his clinical interests span restorative, endodontic, periodontal and aesthetic dentistry, and his practice covers the treatment of damaged or infected teeth as well as cosmetic dental care.

He studied at İstanbul University Faculty of Dentistry from 1980 to 1985. After graduating, he worked at Trakya Clinic from 1985 to 1986 and then completed his military service between 1986 and 1987. From 1987 to 2007 he ran a private dental practice. In 2007 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services, including Acıbadem Göktürk Medical Center, and he has continued to practice within the group since then. He is a member of the İstanbul Chamber of Dentists and has also held board membership at Yıldırımspor Club, serving as board chairman in 2006–2007.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karako’s areas of expertise include tooth fractures and enamel loss, dental root infection, tooth wear and bad breath. For teeth affected by infection of the root, he performs root canal treatment; where a tooth cannot be preserved, tooth extraction and replacement with dental implants are among the options he offers. He also provides fillings and treatment for gum disease, gingivitis and gum recession.

In aesthetic dentistry, his work includes porcelain restorations, laminate veneers, zirconia restorations and composite bonding. He also applies botulinum toxin to the masseter muscle for selected dental and jaw-related concerns, such as teeth grinding and temporomandibular joint conditions, and may recommend night guards where appropriate. The choice of approach depends on the clinical examination and the patient’s individual situation, and not every option is suitable for every patient.

How Dr. Karako works with international patients

Dr. Karako consults in Turkish and English. For patients traveling from abroad, the hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as dental X-ray or CT reports, along with records of previous dental work, arranges appointments and organizes the visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Interpreters can be arranged when needed. Video consultation is also available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling.
