Prof. Barış Kocaoğlu, MD

Prof. Barış Kocaoğlu, MD is a specialist in Orthopedic Surgery & Traumatology at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are foot and ankle surgery and shoulder and elbow surgery, and his clinical work also covers sports medicine and sports traumatology, knee and joint injuries, and joint diseases.

Dr. Kocaoğlu graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1999 and completed his residency in Orthopedics and Traumatology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 2005, the same year he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. In 2006–2007 he completed a fellowship at the University Of Iowa, Hospitals and Clinics, Sports Medicine Division, in the United States. From 2008 to 2013 he was a lecturer at the Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine / Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology. He became an associate professor in 2013 and a professor in 2018, and in 2019 he took part in the ESSKA-AOSSM Travelling Fellowship. He is a member of ESSKA, KSSTA, the Hip Arthroscopy and Joint Preservation Surgery Association and ELPA (Euroleaque player PA), and he serves as a member of the Turkish Basketball Federation medical board and doctor of the A men’s national team. His published work includes studies on adhesion reduction after tendon and knee surgery, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic repair of Bankart lesions, open versus minimally invasive Achilles tendon repair, thoracolumbar burst fractures and two-stage autologous chondrocyte implantation.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Kocaoğlu’s practice is dedicated to the foot and ankle. This includes foot surgery for structural and degenerative problems, diabetic foot surgery, Charcot foot surgery and the treatment of clubfoot (pes equinovarus). His second subspecialty area is the upper limb, where he assesses and treats shoulder conditions and performs elbow surgery.

In sports medicine and sports traumatology, he treats cruciate ligament tears, meniscus tears, muscle tears and other knee and joint injuries, as well as joint diseases more broadly. He also sees patients with back, neck and low back pain and disc herniation. The appropriate approach for each patient, whether non-surgical or surgical, is decided after clinical assessment and review of imaging.

How Dr. Kocaoğlu works with international patients

Dr. Kocaoğlu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
