Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burçin Beken

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burçin Beken is a pediatric allergy specialist who sees children within the Pediatrics unit at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital and Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. Her clinical work covers childhood asthma, food allergies, urticaria (hives), immune system disorders and other pediatric allergies, as well as the treatment of atopic, contact and seborrheic dermatitis in children. She has more than 19 years in medicine and consults in Turkish and English.

Dr. Beken graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2007. From 2008 to 2013 she trained as a Research Assistant Physician at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, completing her pediatrics training in 2013. Between 2015 and 2019 she worked as a Subspecialty Research Assistant at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Immunology and Allergic Diseases, completing her subspecialty training in Pediatric Immunology and Allergic Diseases in 2019. She then served as a Specialist Physician at İstanbul Health Sciences University Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital from 2019 to 2021 before moving to her current position in 2021. She is also a Doctor Faculty Member at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University Department of Pediatrics. She is a member of the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), where she serves as Pediatric Section Representative on the EAACI Junior Member Assembly Board, and of the Türk Toraks Association, the Turkish National Allergy and Clinical Immunology Association and the Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Academy Association. Her published work includes articles on the interpretation of skin prick tests, asthma and allergic diseases in children with coronavirus disease 2019, local allergic rhinitis from a pediatric perspective, and food sensitization and food allergy in atopic dermatitis, appearing in journals such as Allergy, Pediatric Allergy and Immunology and International Archives of Allergy and Immunology.

Clinical focus

Dr. Beken assesses and manages allergic and immune-related conditions in children. Her focus includes childhood asthma, food allergies in children, urticaria (hives) and immune system disorders in children. The assessment typically takes into account the child’s symptoms and medical history so that treatment planning can be adapted to the individual case.

She also treats allergic and inflammatory skin conditions in children, including atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis. Where a food allergy is suspected alongside a skin condition, the evaluation may consider possible links between the two, in line with her published interest in food sensitization in atopic dermatitis.

How Dr. Beken works with international patients

Dr. Beken consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. Before the visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing test results, imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their child’s case before or instead of traveling.
