Prof. Cemal Üstün, MD

Prof. Cemal Üstün, MD is a specialist in Clinical Laboratory and in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 28 years in medicine. He graduated from Dicle University Faculty of Medicine in 1998 and completed his specialty training in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology at Dicle University Faculty of Medicine in 2007. He was appointed Professor Doctor in 2019.

Dr. Üstün began his career as a Research Assistant Doctor at the Dicle University Faculty of Medicine Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Clinic (2002–2007) and remained there as a Specialist Doctor (2007–2008). He then worked as a Specialist Doctor at the Ministry of Health Elazığ Training and Research Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Clinic (2008–2011) and the Ministry of Health Elazığ Harput State Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Clinic (2011–2012). From 2012 to 2014 he held academic posts at the Abant İzzet Baysal University Faculty of Medicine Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, first as Assistant Associate Professor and then as Associate Professor Doctor. Between 2016 and 2019 he worked at the Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, Atakent Hospital Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Clinic, with a focus on infection and control in adult bone marrow transplant patients. In 2019 he joined Hasan Kalyoncu University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Nutrition and Dietetics, Gaziantep, as Professor Doctor. He is a member of the Turkish Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Association (KLİMİK), Turkish Hospital Infections and Control Association (THİKD), Antimikrobiyal Kemoterapi Association (ANKEM), Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialty Association (EKMUD), Viral Hepatitle Savaşım Association (VHSD), Febril Nötropeni Association (FND), Dezenfeksiyon Antisepsi Sterilizasyon Association (DAS) and Turkish Hematology Association (THD). His published work includes studies on hospital-acquired infections and their surveillance, antibiotic resistance, hepatitis B and hepatitis C seroprevalence, brucellosis and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever.

Clinical focus

Dr. Üstün assesses and manages adult patients with infectious diseases. His areas of expertise include lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia, as well as communicable diseases more broadly. He also sees patients with hepatitis and shingles.

Beyond the treatment of established infections, his practice covers adult vaccination and travel health, including vaccination planning and advice for patients before or after international travel. His background in clinical microbiology and infection control, including experience with infections in adult bone marrow transplant patients, informs his diagnostic and treatment approach.

How Dr. Üstün works with international patients

Dr. Üstün consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages.
