Prof. Cihan Aksoy, MD

Prof. Cihan Aksoy, MD is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialist at Acibadem Taksim Hospital in Istanbul, where he works in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation unit. He graduated from Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1979 and completed his specialty training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1988, after earlier posts as a neurosurgery assistant at Ministry of Health İzmir Atatürk Hospital and at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine. He became Associate Professor in 1990 and Professor in 1996 at the same faculty, where he served as a faculty member from 1988 to 2015 and, from 2013 to 2015, as Professor of the Pain Science Department within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He has more than 47 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023.

In 1990, Dr. Aksoy was a visiting researcher at Austria Vienna Klosterneuburg AUVA Weisser Hof Rehabilitation Hospital, and in 1991 he was a Visiting Associate Professor in the Departments of Intensive Neurology and Neurological Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Medicine in Innsbruck, Austria. His manual medicine training includes courses with Prof. Lewitt, Prof. Tilscher and Prof. Berger in Innsbruck, Graz, Linz and Vienna (1991), Prof. Todor Todoroff in Türkiye and Varna (2000–2004, 300 hours), FIMM President Dr. Wolfgang von Heyman (2012–2016, 450 hours) and FIMM Instructor Marc Henry-Gouchart (2017). Between 2010 and 2017 he completed complementary medicine training in neural therapy, applied kinesiology and microacupuncture at various European schools with Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Nazlıkul. At İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine he founded the Multidisciplinary Temporomandibular Joint Diseases Diagnosis and Treatment Unit (1991) and the Local Injection – Treatment with Injections Unit (1992). From 2010 to 2015 he coordinated the physical therapy and rehabilitation units at Florence Nightingale Hospitals, and from 2015 to 2022 he worked as an independent consultant physician at institutions including Romatem Nişantaşı, Romatem Ulus and Liv Ulus. He is President and Founding Member of the Basic Complementary and Supportive Medicine Association (TETAD), Founding President of the Manual Medicine Association, a former President of the Turkish Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Association, and a member of the Accreditation Board of the Turkish Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Proficiency Board (Turkish PMR Board).

Clinical focus

Dr. Aksoy’s clinical work centers on robotic rehabilitation, the treatment of movement disorders, including Parkinson’s rehabilitation, and spine health. He also sees patients with chronic muscle pain and fibromyalgia, and provides lymphedema treatment as well as respiratory therapy and rehabilitation.

His approach draws on manual medicine and manual therapy, areas in which he has trained over several decades. Assessment generally considers mobility, pain, functional needs and the individual goals of each patient, and the suitability of any rehabilitation program is determined case by case after clinical evaluation.

How Dr. Aksoy works with international patients

Dr. Aksoy consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling.
