Esra Kotan, MD

Esra Kotan, MD is a pediatrician at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Pediatrics unit. With more than 52 years in medicine, her practice centers on the preventive care of infants and children, including vaccinations and well-child follow-up, together with the evaluation and treatment of common infant and childhood health conditions.

Dr. Kotan studied at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine from 1974 to 1980 and completed her specialization in the Department of Child Health and Diseases at the same faculty in 1986. Her early career included positions at SSK Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital between 1982 and 1986 and at SSK Sivas Hospital from 1987 to 1989. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2007. She is a member of the Pediatrik Endocrilogy Association.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Kotan’s work is preventive. She provides childhood vaccinations and well-child follow-up, monitoring development over time so that changes can be identified early. She assesses and treats pediatric upper respiratory tract infections and other pediatric infectious diseases, and she follows children with growth disorders, where careful measurement and review over successive visits form the basis of the assessment.

Dr. Kotan also monitors pediatric nutrition and evaluates children with iron deficiency and anemia, conditions that may be related to diet, growth or other underlying causes and are usually assessed with a clinical examination and laboratory tests. In infants, she assesses feeding-related concerns such as lactose intolerance and infant colic, discussing feeding patterns and symptoms with parents and advising on management appropriate to the individual child. Treatment decisions are made after the history, examination findings and any test results have been reviewed with the family.

How Dr. Kotan works with international patients

Dr. Kotan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports, including laboratory results, growth records, vaccination records and any imaging or discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing test results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options with the parents. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss a child’s condition or review reports remotely before or after a visit; whether an in-person examination is needed is decided on a case-by-case basis.
