Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Subaşı

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mahmut Subaşı is a thoracic surgeon at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Thoracic Surgery Department. With more than 25 years in medicine, his work covers the diagnosis and surgical treatment of diseases of the lungs, chest wall and diaphragm, including minimally invasive approaches such as single-port VATS.

Dr. Subaşı graduated from Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine in 2001 and completed his thoracic surgery training at the Atatürk University Faculty of Medicine Department of Thoracic Surgery in 2008, having worked there as a research assistant between 2003 and 2009. After his compulsory state service at Kars Harakani State Hospital, he served as a specialist at Erzurum Regional Training and Research Hospital, at Ankara Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital from 2015 to 2019, and at Ankara City Hospital. In 2020 he was appointed assistant professor of thoracic surgery at Istanbul Medipol University, and in 2025 he became an associate professor in thoracic surgery at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2026. He is a member of the European Respiratory Society, the Turkish Thoracic Surgery Association, the Turkish Respiratory Research Association and the Türk Toraks Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Subaşı’s clinical interests include lung cancer and other thoracic cancers, as well as chest wall tumors. He performs lung surgery, including single-port VATS, a video-assisted technique carried out through a single small incision, where this approach is considered appropriate for the individual patient. He also performs bronchoscopy, which is used to examine the airways and to obtain tissue or fluid samples when a diagnosis needs to be clarified.

A further area of his practice is the treatment of pneumothorax, a condition in which air collects between the lung and the chest wall. He also treats chest wall deformities, namely pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum, and disorders of the diaphragm. Because the suitability of any surgical or diagnostic procedure depends on the individual case, the appropriate option is determined after a review of the patient’s imaging, clinical findings and previous treatments. How Dr. Subaşı works with international patients

Dr. Subaşı consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as CT, MRI or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
