Prof. Mehmet Özkan, MD

Prof. Mehmet Özkan, MD is a cardiovascular surgeon in the Cardiovascular Surgery unit at Acibadem Bodrum Hospital in Muğla. His subspecialties are vascular surgery and varicose vein treatment, and his work covers surgical conditions of the heart valves, the aorta, the peripheral arteries and the veins. He has more than 39 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2024.

Dr. Özkan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and completed his specialty training at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in 1994, having worked there as an assistant doctor from 1988. In 1993 he was a clinical observer at The Pennsylvania State University, The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, USA. After compulsory service at Aydın State Hospital, he returned to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular Surgery as a specialist doctor from 1997 to 1999 and subsequently held specialist and associate professor positions at hospitals in Ankara, Trabzon, İstanbul and Samsun. He became an Associate Professor in 2007 and was appointed Professor at İstinye University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular Surgery in 2019, working at İstinye University, İstanbul until 2021 and then at Kolan British Hospital, K.K.T.C. He is a member of the Turkish Association of Thoracic, Cardiovascular and Vascular Surgery and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. His published work includes papers on carbon dioxide insufflation in the preparation of the internal thoracic artery, oxidative stress during cardiopulmonary bypass, early clinical experience with the On-X prosthetic heart valve and the surgical and medical treatment of Brucella endocarditis, appearing in journals such as J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg, Free Radic Biol Med and The Canadian Journal of Cardiology.

Clinical focus

Dr. Özkan evaluates and surgically treats aortic aneurysm, aortic valve stenosis and other heart valve diseases, as well as ventricular septal defect (VSD). Treatment decisions in these conditions depend on the individual findings, and not every patient assessed will be a candidate for surgery.

In vascular surgery, his areas of expertise include major vessel diseases, peripheral arterial occlusion and Buerger disease. He also treats venous conditions, including venous insufficiency and varicose veins. The appropriate approach is determined after a review of the patient’s history, examination findings and imaging.

How Dr. Özkan works with international patients

Dr. Özkan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example CT, MRI or ultrasound reports, echocardiography and laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit.
