Assoc. Prof. Murat Baştopcu, MD

Assoc. Prof. Murat Baştopcu, MD is a cardiovascular surgeon in the Cardiovascular Surgery unit at Acibadem Maslak Hospital and Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul. His subspecialties are vascular surgery and varicose vein treatment, and his clinical work centers on arterial and venous disease, including aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial occlusions and venous insufficiency. He has more than 16 years in medicine and joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2024.

Dr. Baştopcu graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 2013 and worked as a general practitioner at Yakacık Maternity and Children’s Diseases Hospital from 2013 to 2014. He completed his specialty training in cardiovascular surgery at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital in 2019, then served as a specialist physician at Bitlis Tatvan State Hospital (2019–2021) and at İstanbul Yedikule Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital (2021). In 2021 he became Deputy Chief Physician at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital, where he also held the Chairmanship of the Academic Board and the Chairmanship of the Clinical Research Commission; he received his Associate Professorship in Cardiovascular Surgery there in 2023. His training included an observership at the Heart Failure Clinic of Albert Einstein University Montefiore Heart Center in New York, USA (2015) and an observership with Dr. Patrick Perier at the Cardiac Surgery Clinic of Rhön-Klinikum Bad Neustadt in Bad Neustadt/Saale, Germany (2018). He served as Editorial Assistant of the Turkish Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in 2019 and has co-authored peer-reviewed publications, including work on outcomes in adult cardiac surgery and on risk scores in postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. He is a member of the Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, the National Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Society and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

Clinical focus

Dr. Baştopcu’s practice covers major vascular diseases of the arteries and veins. On the arterial side, he assesses and treats aortic aneurysm and peripheral arterial occlusions. Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), a catheter-based form of endovascular surgery, is among the procedures he performs; whether an endovascular or an open approach is appropriate is decided case by case after review of the patient’s imaging and general condition.

On the venous side, he evaluates and treats venous insufficiency and provides varicose vein treatment. In each case the aim is a clear assessment of the underlying vascular problem and a discussion of the treatment options that are realistic for the individual patient.

How Dr. Baştopcu works with international patients

Dr. Baştopcu consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging — for example CT, MRI or ultrasound reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries — arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before traveling.
