Prof. Oğuzhan Karatepe, MD

Prof. Oğuzhan Karatepe, MD is a general surgeon at Acibadem Taksim Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the General Surgery unit. Dr. Karatepe graduated from İstanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1999 and completed his General Surgery training at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital in 2004, having worked there as a research assistant (resident in surgery) from 1999 to 2004. He then served as a specialist doctor in general surgery at Okmeydanı Training Hospital from 2004 to 2007, followed by a Peripheral Vascular Surgery fellowship at İstanbul Faculty of Medicine (2007–2008). From 2008 to 2011 he was Chief Assistant in General Surgery at Okmeydanı Training Hospital. He completed a Hepatobiliary Surgery subspecialty fellowship at Erasmus University, Netherlands, in 2011–2012, and was Associate Professor of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Bezmialem Vakıf University from 2012 to 2014. Between 2014 and 2018 he was Professor of General Surgery at Memorial Şişli Hospital. His later roles include İstanbul Yeniyüzyıl University (2018–2021), Liver and Pancreatic Surgery at Liv Hospital Vadi Istanbul (2021–2022) and Karatepe Clinical Cancer Center (2018–2024). He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2025. His memberships include the Turkish Hepato Pancreato Biliary Surgery Association, the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery, ESSO (European Society of Surgical Oncology) and the Surgical Infection Association, of which he is a founder and board member. His published work addresses topics such as bile duct injury repair after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, pancreatic fistula prediction after pancreaticoduodenectomy and laparoscopic surgery for distal pancreatic tumors.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Karatepe’s work is the surgical management of pancreatic diseases and of liver and biliary tract diseases, including fatty liver disease and liver failure. He also practises oncological surgery, endocrine surgery, digestive system surgery and colorectal surgery, and treats hemorrhoids and other anorectal diseases. Where appropriate, he uses robotic and minimally invasive surgical approaches.

In obesity surgery, his areas of expertise include gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The suitability of any procedure depends on the individual patient’s diagnosis, general health and previous treatments, and is decided after a clinical evaluation.
