Prof. Dr. Sedef Şahin is a dermatologist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Dermatology unit. She graduated from Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and completed her specialty training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases in 1992, having worked there as a research assistant from 1988. From 1992 to 1994 she served as Chief Assistant at the Ministry of Health Ankara Hospital Dermatology Clinic before returning to Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Dermatology as a specialist physician in 1994.
In 1996–1997 Dr. Şahin was a Melanoma Fellow in the Skin and Cancer Unit Oncology Section of the New York University School of Medicine Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology. She became Associate Professor at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Dermatology in 1998 and Professor in 2004, and served as Head of the Department of Dermatology at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine from 2007 to 2008. She joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2008. Dr. Şahin is a member of the Turkish Dermatology Association, the Dermatology and Venereal Diseases Association, the Ankara Dermatology and Venereal Diseases Association, the American Academy of Dermatology and the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology. Her published work includes studies on narrowband UVB phototherapy in mycosis fungoides and in pityriasis lichenoides chronica, phototherapy in childhood, PUVA and calcipotriol treatment of vitiligo, Malassezia colonization of neonatal skin, and the dermatoscopic and histopathological features of pigmented basal cell carcinoma.
Clinical focus
Dr. Şahin evaluates and treats inflammatory skin conditions, including eczema, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis, as well as acne and Behçet’s disease. Her clinical interests also include excessive sweating.
A further part of her practice concerns skin infections, including fungal skin infections, fungal infections of the feet and nails, Candida infections and sexually transmitted diseases. Drawing on her fellowship training in melanoma, she also assesses malignant melanoma and other skin tumours, with attention to diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning for each patient.
