Assoc. Prof. Selçuk Görmez, MD

Assoc. Prof. Selçuk Görmez, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department of Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. He graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his specialty training in cardiology at Dr. Siyami Ersek Chest, Heart and Vascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital in 1997. He has worked in medicine for more than 34 years, with a career that spans general cardiology, interventional cardiology and academic teaching.

After his training, Dr. Görmez worked at Gümüşsuyu Asker Hospital (1997–1998), Kars Devlet Hospital (1998–2005) and Çorlu Özel Şifa Hospital (2005–2006). From 2006 to 2009 he was part of the Department of Interventional Cardiology at Şişli Florence Nightingale Hospital, followed by a period at Medicana International Hospital (2009–2010). In 2010 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services Kadıköy Hospital, where he practiced until 2022 before moving to his current hospital. He has been a faculty member of the Department of Cardiology at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine since 2014 and has served as Head of the Department of Cardiology there since 2024. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association, the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the European Heart Failure Association and the Avrupa Perkütan Kardiyovasküler Girişimler Association, and has been a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) since 2007. His published research includes work on adipose tissue and coronary atherosclerosis in patients with metabolic syndrome, follow-up of drug-eluting stents in acute myocardial infarction, outcomes of percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty compared with mitral valve replacement, and hypertension and anticoagulant treatment in hospitalized patients with COVID-19.

Clinical focus

Dr. Görmez evaluates and manages patients with coronary artery disease, including diagnostic angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention. His interventional work also covers chronic total occlusion, in which a coronary artery is completely blocked and may be reopened through a catheter-based procedure when appropriate. He treats risk conditions such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, which contribute to the development of coronary disease.

A further part of his practice concerns heart failure, heart valve diseases including mitral valve regurgitation, and heart rhythm disorders. He assesses arrhythmias and atrial fibrillation and provides care for patients who have or may need a pacemaker. The suitability of any procedure is decided individually after the patient’s history, imaging and examination findings have been reviewed.

How Dr. Görmez works with international patients

Dr. Görmez consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital stay. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
