Assoc. Prof. Sibel Aka, MD

Assoc. Prof. Sibel Aka, MD is a pediatrician at Acibadem Dr. Sinasi Can (Kadikoy) Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Pediatrics unit. She has practiced medicine for more than 40 years. Her career began in 1986 as a general practitioner at Vezirkörü State Hospital, followed by posts at the Kanlıca Maternal and Child Health center and the Küçükyalı Maternal and Child Health center. Her clinical work is directed at children and their families, covering preventive care, growth and nutrition monitoring, and the diagnosis and treatment of common childhood infections.

Dr. Aka graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1986. She trained in pediatrics at the Haydarpaşa Numune Training and Research Hospital Department of Child Health and Diseases, completing her specialty training in 1997, and then remained at the same department as a specialist and chief assistant until 2008. She subsequently held positions at Kadıköy Şifa Hospital Ataşehir Medical Center and Başkent University Faculty of Medicine, where she served as a lecturer. From 2012 she taught at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, first as a lecturer and later as an assistant associate professor, and she was appointed Associate Professor there in 2021. She is a member of the Türk Pediatri Association. Her published work, appearing in national and international journals, has addressed topics such as acute bronchiolitis in infants, febrile seizures, asthma in children, meningitis, enteric fever, and tuberculosis follow-up in children.

Clinical focus

Dr. Aka provides general pediatric care with an emphasis on prevention. This includes childhood immunizations and well-child follow-up, in which a child’s growth, development, and general health are reviewed at regular intervals. She also monitors pediatric nutrition and evaluates children with constipation, a frequent concern in this age group.

A further area of her practice is the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases. She sees children with upper respiratory tract infections and with the childhood rash illnesses, including chickenpox, measles, rubella, and scarlet fever. Assessment in these conditions is based on the child’s history, a clinical examination, and, where needed, laboratory testing, with management adapted to the individual child.

How Dr. Aka works with international patients

Dr. Aka consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports, such as vaccination records, laboratory results, imaging reports, and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing records and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the available options.
