Prof. Dr. Umut Akgün

Prof. Dr. Umut Akgün is an orthopedic surgery and traumatology specialist at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in Istanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialty areas are shoulder and elbow surgery and foot and ankle surgery, and his clinical work also covers sports medicine and sports traumatology. He has more than 27 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Akgün graduated from Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1999 and completed his specialty training in orthopedics and traumatology at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine, where he worked from 2000 to 2005. During this period he undertook a trauma fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York (2003). After serving at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic of Diyarbakır Military Hospital (2005–2006), he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2007. He completed a sports fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven in 2010. His academic career at Acıbadem University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, progressed from assistant professor (2009) to associate professor (2012) and professor (2017); he has served as Department Chair since 2020. In 2022 he earned a doctorate in Movement and Exercise Sciences. He is a member of the Turkish Sports Injuries Arthroscopy and Knee Surgery Association, the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association, the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy, the European Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Association (SECEC / ESSSE) and the Turkish Orthopedics and Traumatology Union Association. His published research includes work on rotator cuff and subscapularis repair, arthroscopic knot and suture anchor performance, meniscal repair techniques, anterior cruciate ligament anatomy and graft sizing, and arthroscopy skills training.

Clinical focus

Dr. Akgün’s practice centers on injuries and disorders of the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot and ankle. In the knee, he assesses and treats cruciate ligament tears, meniscus tears and other joint injuries, drawing on a background in sports medicine and sports traumatology. His work also includes the treatment of muscle tears and the management of shoulder and elbow conditions requiring surgical care.

Foot and ankle surgery forms a second subspecialty area. In trauma care, Dr. Akgün performs minimally invasive trauma surgery where appropriate. The choice between non-operative and surgical treatment, and the specific technique used, is decided on an individual basis after clinical examination and review of imaging.

How Dr. Akgün works with international patients

Dr. Akgün consults in Turkish and English. The hospital’s international patient team coordinates the exchange of medical reports and imaging before travel and arranges appointment scheduling. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history, the mechanism and duration of the injury or complaint, a physical examination, and a review of existing MRI, X-ray or CT studies; additional imaging may be requested if needed before a treatment plan is discussed. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to have an initial assessment or to discuss their existing reports before deciding whether to travel.
