Arzu Özgeneci Öngün, MD

Arzu Özgeneci Öngün, MD is a pediatrician at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Pediatrics unit. Dr. Öngün trained at University of London Charing Cross Hospital,UK in 1986 and graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1987. She completed her specialty training in 1994 at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Department of Child Health and Diseases. In 1995 she worked at St. Lukes and Roosevelt Hospital, New York, USA, and from 1995 to 1996 she served as a specialist physician at Kocaeli University Faculty of Medicine. Between 1996 and 1998 she completed a fellowship in the Department of Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, New York, USA. She then worked at Özel Muayenehane from 1998 to 2004 and at VKV Amerikan Hospital from 2004 to 2009, before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2009. She is a member of the AAP, the Milli Pediatri Association, the İstanbul Medical Chamber and the İmmunoloji Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Öngün evaluates and treats a range of conditions seen in general pediatric practice. These include childhood constipation, iron deficiency and anemia in children, and upper respiratory tract illnesses. She also monitors pediatric nutritional disorders and provides well-child follow-up, in which growth, development and general health are reviewed at regular intervals.

A further part of her work is the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric infectious diseases, including childhood rash illnesses. She assesses children with chickenpox, measles, rubella and scarlet fever, aiming to establish the diagnosis, plan appropriate treatment and arrange follow-up where this is needed. Management is decided case by case after a clinical examination and, where relevant, a review of laboratory results.

How Dr. Öngün works with international patients

Dr. Öngün consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for families who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as laboratory results, X-ray or ultrasound reports, previous treatment records and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the child’s history and symptoms, a review of existing results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options with the parents or caregivers. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial discussion or for follow-up after treatment, depending on the child’s situation.
