Prof. Aziz Kaya Alturfan, MD

Prof. Aziz Kaya Alturfan, MD is an orthopedic surgery and traumatology specialist at Acibadem Fulya Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Orthopedics & Joint Center. His subspecialties are hip and knee replacement surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, and foot and ankle surgery. He has more than 57 years of experience in medicine.

Dr. Alturfan graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1969 and completed his specialty training in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the same faculty in 1975. In 1982 he worked at the Berlin University Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic and the Urban Hospital Orthopedics Clinic. From 1985 to 1995 he was based at Florence Nightingale Hospital, and in 1993 he spent time at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute and the Memorial Orthopaedic Surgical Group in the United States. Between 1995 and 2014 he practiced at Taksim Alman Hospital, and in 2014 he joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services. He has held the Çapa Faculty of Medicine Department of Orthopedics Chairmanship.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Alturfan’s work is joint replacement. He performs hip replacement surgery and knee replacement surgery, most often for patients whose joint pain and loss of function are related to osteoarthritis. Whether surgery is appropriate, and which approach is suitable, depends on the individual patient’s symptoms, imaging findings and overall health, and is decided after a clinical assessment.

His practice also covers sports medicine and sports traumatology, including knee and joint injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament tears and meniscus tears, as well as the treatment of muscle tears. In addition, he treats conditions of the upper and lower limbs through shoulder surgery, elbow surgery, and foot and ankle surgery. Treatment plans may involve non-surgical measures, surgery, or a combination, according to the diagnosis and the patient’s needs.

How Dr. Alturfan works with international patients

Dr. Alturfan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultations are available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before deciding whether to travel; in many orthopedic cases, however, a physical examination and current imaging are still needed before a final treatment plan can be made.
