Prof. Ender Arıkan, MD

Prof. Ender Arıkan, MD is an endocrinology specialist at Acibadem Bakirkoy Hospital in İstanbul, where he practices within the Endocrinology & Metabolism unit. Dr. Arıkan graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1987 and completed his Internal Medicine training at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine in 1992. In 1998 he completed training in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine and was appointed Assistant Associate Professor at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine, where he became Associate Professor in 2006. Between 2000 and 2001 he served as Deputy Chief Physician of Trakya University Faculty of Medicine Hospital. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2006. He is a member of the Turkish Endocrinology and Metabolism Association, the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Association, and the Thrombosis, Hemostasis and Angiology Association. His published work includes studies on obesity and metabolic syndrome, glucose tolerance in essential hypertension, inflammatory markers in overt and subclinical hypothyroidism, cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes mellitus, and case reports on double parathyroid adenoma and primary empty sella syndrome.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Arıkan’s clinical work concerns the thyroid gland. He evaluates and manages thyroid diseases, including goitre, thyroid nodules and hyperthyroidism, and is involved in the endocrine assessment and follow-up of patients with thyroid cancer. He also treats pituitary diseases, which are addressed within his dedicated subspecialty area.

His second main focus is metabolic disease. Dr. Arıkan manages type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity, including morbid obesity. Treatment plans are based on the individual patient’s history, laboratory results and existing imaging, and the options are discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

How Dr. Arıkan works with international patients

Dr. Arıkan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging, laboratory results and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options.
