Prof. F. Arda Atar, MD

Prof. F. Arda Atar, MD, FEBU is a Professor of Urology at Acibadem Ataşehir Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Urology unit. His practice is built around three closely related fields: urinary stone disease, endourology and minimally invasive laser treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is a Fellow of the European Board of Urology, has 21 years in medicine and consults in Turkish and English.

Dr. Atar graduated from the English Medical Program of İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2005 and completed his residency in urology at İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2011. After his compulsory public service at Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital (2011 to 2013), he spent eight years at Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital, first as chief assistant (2013 to 2017) and then as associate professor and instructor in urology (2017 to 2021), where he organised and taught live surgical workshops on modern stone surgery and supervised the training of urology residents. From 2021 to 2023 he was Associate Professor of Urology at Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital (University of Health Sciences), where he played a leading role in establishing the hospital’s HoLEP programme and trained residents and fellows in laser and endourological surgery. He joined Acibadem Ataşehir Hospital as Professor of Urology in 2023.

According to his professional CV, he has performed more than 2,000 endoscopic and percutaneous stone procedures, including complex kidney stone surgery in both adult and paediatric patients, and more than 200 HoLEP procedures within the first year of the programme he helped establish. He has contributed to the development of endourological techniques through live surgery workshops, courses and presentations at national and international congresses, and he is the author or co-author of 17 PubMed-indexed publications (2016 to 2026), most of them on percutaneous and retrograde stone surgery.

Clinical focus

Dr. Atar treats kidney stones, ureteral stones and bladder stones with the full range of endoscopic and percutaneous techniques. Depending on the size, location and composition of the stone, treatment may be laser lithotripsy through flexible or semi-rigid ureteroscopy, retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), standard or mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), laparoscopic stone surgery or ESWL. High-power holmium lasers are used to reduce kidney, ureter and bladder stones to fine dust with minimal tissue trauma, and he also manages complex and paediatric stone cases.

For men with an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), he performs HoLEP, holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, a technique that removes the obstructing tissue with precision and very little bleeding regardless of prostate size, which allows a short hospital stay and a quick return to daily life for most patients. He also treats ureteral strictures and urethral strictures endoscopically and with reconstructive surgery. The choice of investigation and treatment depends on each patient’s findings, and options are discussed individually after clinical evaluation.

How Dr. Atar works with international patients

Dr. Atar sees patients in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example CT or ultrasound reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination, and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of traveling to İstanbul.
