Prof. Gökhan Bozkurt, MD

Prof. Gökhan Bozkurt, MD is a neurosurgeon with more than 38 years in medicine. He graduated from Ondokuzmayıs University Faculty of Medicine in 1988 and, after early posts at health centers in Artvin and Ankara, began his neurosurgical training in 1992 at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine Department of Neurosurgery. From 1999 to 2008 he worked as a Neurosurgery Specialist and Research Assistant in the Advanced Neurological Sciences Program at Hacettepe University, Institute of Health Sciences, Institute of Neurological Sciences and Psychiatry, where he also completed his PhD studies. In 2006–2007 he held a Research Fellowship at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Toronto Western Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery.

Dr. Bozkurt’s academic career continued at Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, where he served as Lecturer (2008–2011), Assistant Professor (2011–2012) and Associate Professor (2012–2014). He then practiced at Memorial Ankara Hospital from 2014 to 2017 and was Professor at Istinye University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery in 2017–2018, working at Bahçeşehir Liv University Hospital and Ankara Liv Hospital. From 2018 to 2021 he worked at Memorial Bahcelievler Hospital, and in 2021 he joined Acibadem Health Group. He is a member of the Turkish Neurosurgical Society, the Turkish Neurosurgical Society Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Surgery Group, and the Society of Neurooncology.

Clinical focus

Dr. Bozkurt’s clinical work covers spinal, peripheral nerve, cranial and pediatric neurosurgery. In the spine, he treats degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis and syringomyelia, using procedures such as posterolateral lumbar fusion, transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion and bilateral decompression with a unilateral approach; he has co-authored a radiological and clinical comparison of the two fusion techniques in degenerative lumbar stenosis. His peripheral nerve practice includes peripheral nerve pathologies and sciatic nerve injury, an area in which he has published experimental studies on nerve regeneration. He also treats nervous system tumors and mesial temporal sclerosis-related epilepsy, and performs epilepsy surgery. In pediatric craniofacial neurosurgery, his listed expertise includes craniosynostosis and cloverleaf skull deformity, treated with spring-mediated cranioplasty, a technique on which he has published with colleagues.

His publications, dated between 2006 and 2020, also address epidural fibrosis after spinal surgery, stem cell approaches in experimental spinal cord injury and syringomyelia models, and a range of clinical case reports in cranial and spinal neurosurgery.

How Dr. Bozkurt works with international patients

Dr. Bozkurt consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages.
