Clinical focus

A significant part of Dr. Özbay’s practice is orthopedic oncology. He evaluates and treats bone tumors and soft tissue sarcomas, as well as bone cysts in children. Surgery for tumors in the arms and legs frequently overlaps with reconstruction, and advanced limb reconstruction is one of his subspecialties. This involves restoring the structure and function of a limb in complex cases and is closely connected to his work in deformity surgery, where the alignment or shape of a bone or limb is corrected. Each case is assessed individually, with imaging and, where relevant, pathology results forming the basis of the plan.

Dr. Özbay also manages trauma and a broad range of joint diseases, including osteoarthritis. Assessment of a painful or stiff joint typically begins with a clinical examination and a review of imaging, followed by a discussion of the non-surgical and surgical options that may be appropriate. Wound care is a further area of expertise; chronic or complicated wounds of the limbs are often managed alongside the underlying bone or joint problem rather than in isolation. Treatment recommendations are based on the diagnosis, the imaging findings and the patient’s overall condition, and the possible benefits and limitations of each option are discussed with the patient.

How Dr. Özbay works with international patients

Dr. Özbay consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging — for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries — and arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which can be used for an initial review of existing reports or for a follow-up discussion before or after travel to İstanbul.
