Hakkı Süha Özçelik, MD

Hakkı Süha Özçelik, MD is an otorhinolaryngology specialist in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul. He provides care for ear, nose, throat and sleep-related conditions, with a subspecialty interest in sleep disorders. He has more than 49 years in medicine and has worked within Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2007.

Dr. Özçelik studied medicine at Ege University Faculty of Medicine from 1977 to 1983. His early career included posts at Diyarbakır Lice, Silvan Health Center (1983–1986), a period of military medical service in Gaziantep (1986–1987), Nevşehir Central Health Center (1987–1988) and İzmir Bornova Health Center (1988–1989). From 1989 to 1992 he completed his residency at the Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital Ear, Nose and Throat Department, and he continued to work in the hospital’s ear, nose and throat clinic until 1998, the year in which he completed his training in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at Şişli Etfal Training and Research Hospital. In 1991 and again in 1995 he spent time at Harvard Medical School Massachusets Eye and Infirmary. He is a member of the Türk Otolarengoloji Association, the Turkish Medical Association and the Sigara İçmeyenler Association.

Clinical focus

Dr. Özçelik evaluates and treats a range of ear, nose and throat conditions. His areas of expertise include snoring and sleep disorders, sinusitis, adenoid conditions, pharyngitis and hoarseness. On the ear side, he sees patients with vertigo and performs inner ear surgery. In each case the choice of diagnostic tests and treatment depends on the individual patient’s symptoms, examination findings and previous care, and is discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

His published work reflects the breadth of his clinical experience. He has co-authored papers on endoscopic sinus surgery, the effectiveness of steroids in the treatment of Bell’s palsy, tympanometric and audiometric findings in otitis media with effusion, otorrhea following ventilation tube placement, esophageal and laryngotracheobronchial foreign bodies, the vertical dome division technique in open rhinoplasty, the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap in head and neck reconstruction and experience with the Blom-Singer voice prosthesis. These have appeared in journals including Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the Marmara Medical Journal and the Archives of Turkish Otolaryngology, and in the proceedings of national and international otorhinolaryngology congresses.

How Dr. Özçelik works with international patients

Dr. Özçelik speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
