Dr. Hatice Coşğun

Dr. Hatice Coşğun is a thoracic surgeon at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Thoracic Surgery Department with a subspecialty focus on robotic surgery. Her practice covers the surgical and diagnostic care of conditions affecting the lungs, chest wall, diaphragm and thoracic outlet, and she has more than 33 years in medicine.

Dr. Coşğun graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1993 and completed her specialty training at the Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital Department of Thoracic Surgery in 2002. She has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2013. She is a member of the Turkish Society of Thoracic Surgery, the Turkish Society of Cardiovascular Surgery, the Toraks Association, the Akciğer Kanseri Association and the Society of Respiratory Research.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Coşğun’s work is minimally invasive thoracic surgery. This includes single-port VATS, in which video-assisted procedures are performed through a single small incision, and robotic thoracic surgery. Whether a minimally invasive or an open approach is suitable depends on the individual patient, the location and extent of the disease, and the findings of the pre-operative assessment. Her oncological practice includes lung cancer surgery, surgery for other thoracic cancers and the treatment of chest wall tumors. Surgical planning in these cases is generally based on imaging, pathology and prior treatment history, and is discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

Dr. Coşğun also treats a range of non-cancerous conditions. These include pneumothorax, diaphragm disorders and thoracic outlet syndrome, as well as the chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. Her practice further covers general lung surgery and diagnostic procedures such as bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy, which may be used to examine the airways or to obtain tissue samples when a diagnosis has not yet been established. The choice of procedure, and whether surgery is indicated at all, is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

How Dr. Coşğun works with international patients

Dr. Coşğun consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example CT, MRI or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the possible options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial review of a case or to discuss findings before travel is considered. Any recommendation regarding surgery is made only after the relevant records and, where necessary, an in-person examination have been reviewed.
