Prof. Dr. Ilgaz Doğusoy

Prof. Dr. Ilgaz Doğusoy is a thoracic surgeon at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Thoracic Surgery Department with a subspecialty in robotic surgery. His clinical work covers lung cancer surgery, thoracic cancer surgery, robotic thoracic surgery, single-port VATS, pneumothorax, diaphragm disorders, chest wall tumors, thoracic outlet syndrome, and the chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. With more than 49 years in medicine, he has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2005.

Dr. Doğusoy completed his secondary education at T.E.D. Ankara Koleji in 1977 and graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1984. He completed his thoracic surgery training at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital in 1990. In 1991–1992 he undertook a Thoracic Surgery Fellowship at Texas Medical Center, Houston, USA / MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 2000 he served as Head of the Thoracic Surgery Clinic at Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic, Cardiovascular Surgery Hospital. He is a member of STS, the Toraks Association, the Turkish Society of Thoracic Surgery, ESPS, and the Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and is a Founding Member of the Turkish Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgery.

Clinical focus

Dr. Doğusoy’s practice centers on the surgical evaluation and treatment of diseases of the lungs, chest wall, diaphragm and mediastinum. A significant part of his work involves lung cancer surgery and surgery for other thoracic cancers, including chest wall tumors. Where suitable for the individual patient, he uses minimally invasive approaches such as single-port VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) and robotic thoracic surgery. The choice between open, thoracoscopic and robotic techniques depends on the type and location of the disease, the patient’s general condition and the imaging findings, and is discussed with each patient before a decision is made.

He also treats pneumothorax, diaphragm disorders and thoracic outlet syndrome, and performs corrective surgery for the chest wall deformities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum. Diagnostic procedures in his practice include bronchoscopy and mediastinoscopy, which may be used to evaluate airway findings or mediastinal lymph nodes before a treatment plan is finalized.

How Dr. Doğusoy works with international patients

Dr. Doğusoy consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as CT or X-ray reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit.
