Prof. Mehdi S.Öğüt, MD

Prof. Mehdi S.Öğüt, MD is an ophthalmologist who sees patients in the Ophthalmology unit at Acibadem Kozyatagi Hospital and Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. His subspecialty field is neuro-ophthalmology, and his practice covers both adult and pediatric eye conditions, including amblyopia, strabismus, ptosis, glaucoma, cataract and diseases of the retina. Dr. S.Öğüt graduated from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1980 and completed his ophthalmology training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1987. In the same year he was appointed Professor at the Marmara University Department of Ophthalmology. In 1992 he completed a fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has worked within Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2000. His published work includes studies on the effects of mydriatic eyedrops in neonates, visual evoked potentials in amblyopic children, surgery for congenital nystagmus, assessment of tear drainage and congenital lens coloboma.

Clinical focus

A substantial part of Dr. S.Öğüt’s work concerns pediatric ophthalmology. He evaluates and treats children with amblyopia (reduced vision in one eye, sometimes called lazy eye), ptosis (drooping of the upper eyelid) and strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes that may affect binocular vision. His membership of both the European and international strabismological associations reflects this interest in eye alignment disorders, which he also manages in adults.

In adult ophthalmology, he assesses and treats glaucoma, cataract and retinal diseases, including retinal tears, retinal detachment and macular degeneration. As a neuro-ophthalmologist, he also sees patients whose visual symptoms may arise from disorders of the optic nerve, the visual pathways or eye movement control rather than from the eye itself. The choice of treatment in each case depends on the findings of the examination, the stage of the condition and the patient’s general health, and is discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

How Dr. S.Öğüt works with international patients

Dr. S.Öğüt consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before the visit, the hospital’s international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as previous eye examination findings, MRI or CT reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and visual symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical eye examination and a discussion of the available options.
