Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Köstek, MD

Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Köstek, MD is a general surgeon at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works within the General Surgery unit. In 2024 he received the European Endocrine Surgery Certificate of Competence (European Board of Surgery in Endocrine Surgery) in Rome, Italy, and in 2025 he became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). His international training includes a 2025 placement at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Endocrine Surgery Clinic, Birmingham, Alabama, USA; medical education rotations in 2015 at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota, USA and at Teksas University Faculty of Medicine Houston, Texas, USA; clinical research at the Oncology Clinic of Pittsburgh University Medical Center, Pennsylvania, USA in 2013; and experimental research in tumor immunology at Zürih University Hospital, Switzerland in 2012. He obtained the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) Certificate in 2018. From 2021 to 2024 he worked as a General Surgery Specialist in the Endocrine Surgery Unit of the General Surgery Clinic at Health Sciences University Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital, and from 2024 to 2025 as a General Surgery Specialist at Health Sciences University Ümraniye Training and Research Hospital, General Surgery Clinic.

Clinical focus

Dr. Köstek’s practice centers on endocrine surgery, with a particular focus on thyroid surgery. Patients who are considering an operation for a thyroid condition can discuss with him whether surgery is indicated, what the procedure would involve and what the expected course of recovery would be. Each recommendation is based on the individual clinical picture, including existing imaging, laboratory results and any previous treatment.

He also performs robotic surgery. Robotic techniques are one form of minimally invasive surgery, and whether a robotic approach is suitable depends on the specific condition, the findings on imaging and the patient’s overall health. Dr. Köstek reviews these factors with the patient before any decision about the surgical method is made.

How Dr. Köstek works with international patients

Dr. Köstek consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as ultrasound, CT or MRI reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options.
