Clinical focus
A substantial part of Dr. Karaman’s practice concerns sleep-related conditions, including sleep apnea, snoring and insomnia. His published work includes comparisons of radiofrequency and transoral robotic surgery in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and of laser and electrocautery techniques in robot-assisted tongue base surgery. He also treats nasal and sinus disease, performing septoplasty, septorhinoplasty and nasal and sinus surgery for conditions such as sinusitis; one of his studies examined mucociliary clearance in patients with nasal septal deviation and its change after septoplasty.
Other areas of expertise include voice hoarseness, hearing loss, vertigo and balance disorders, and head and neck surgery. His research publications also address laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, the effect of functional neck dissection and postoperative radiotherapy on the spinal accessory nerve, facial nerve repair, thyroid autograft function and dexamethasone dosing in pediatric tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy. Treatment recommendations depend on the individual assessment, and surgery is one of several options that may be discussed.
