Prof. Murat Turfan, MD

Prof. Murat Turfan, MD is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department of Acibadem Kartal Hospital in İstanbul. He works in cardiology with a subspecialty interest in sports medicine and has more than 23 years in medicine. His clinical work covers the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure, heart valve disease, arrhythmias and coronary artery disease, as well as invasive coronary procedures such as coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.

Dr. Turfan graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2003 and completed his cardiology training at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2009, having worked as a research assistant doctor in the Gazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiology from 2003 to 2009. He then served as a specialist doctor at Ankara Etlik Specialist Training and Research Hospital (2009–2011) and at Çankırı State Hospital (2011). Between 2011 and 2015 he held academic positions at Bezmialem Vakıf University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiology, moving from lecturer specialist doctor to assistant professor doctor and then associate professor doctor. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2020 and became professor doctor at Haliç University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiology in 2022. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association (TKD), the European Cardiology Association (ESC), the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), the European Heart Rhythm Association ( EHRA), the European Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation ( EACPR ) and the European Association of Acute Cardiovascular Care. His published research includes studies on in-hospital mortality in patients with acute heart failure, risk scoring for contrast-induced acute kidney injury in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention, and echocardiographic assessment after percutaneous coronary interventions for chronic total occlusions.

Clinical focus

Dr. Turfan’s clinical focus is on coronary and structural heart conditions. He evaluates and treats coronary artery disease, ischemic heart disease, atherosclerosis, angina and myocardial infarction, and performs coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention where these are indicated. He also manages heart failure, heart valve disease and arrhythmias.

Cardiovascular risk factors form part of his practice, including hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Where appropriate, he discusses medication, lifestyle measures and further diagnostic testing. Decisions about invasive procedures are made after reviewing the patient’s history, existing imaging and current clinical findings, and the possible options are explained to the patient before any plan is agreed.

How Dr. Turfan works with international patients

Dr. Turfan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. The Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients, which may be used for an initial review of reports before any travel is considered.
