Mustafa Demir, MD

Mustafa Demir, MD is an ophthalmologist at Acibadem Atakent Hospital in İstanbul, where he sees patients through the hospital’s Ophthalmology unit. He has spent more than 19 years in medicine, and his clinical interests cover a range of eye conditions in adults and children, including cataract, glaucoma, eyelid drooping, strabismus, macular degeneration, retinal diseases and conjunctivitis.

Dr. Demir graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2007. He then completed his specialty training at Fatih Sultan Mehmet Training and Research Hospital Department of Ophthalmology, where he worked as an assistant doctor from 2007 to 2011. After qualifying as a specialist, he held specialist doctor positions at Şırnak Military Hospital from 2012 to 2013 and at Bartın State Hospital from 2012 to 2015. From 2015 to 2023 he worked as a specialist doctor at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital-Prof.Dr Cemil Taşçıoğlu City Hospital, before joining Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2023.

Clinical focus

Dr. Demir’s practice covers common and complex eye concerns. He assesses and treats glaucoma, a condition in which pressure inside the eye can damage the optic nerve, and macular degeneration and other retinal diseases that affect the back of the eye and central vision. Cataract, in which the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy, is also among his areas of expertise, as is eyelid drooping. Because these conditions can develop gradually and present differently from one patient to another, his approach relies on a careful history and clinical examination before any treatment options are discussed.

Children and their families are also part of Dr. Demir’s practice. He manages paediatric eye conditions and strabismus, a misalignment of the eyes that may be identified in childhood or later in life. He also evaluates and treats conjunctivitis, an inflammation of the surface of the eye that has a number of possible causes and may require different management depending on the underlying reason. In each case, the suitability of a particular treatment depends on the individual patient’s findings and overall eye health.

How Dr. Demir works with international patients

Dr. Demir speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as previous eye examination findings, imaging reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit itself. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination of the eyes and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation with Dr. Demir before travelling or as a follow-up to an in-person visit, with the understanding that some findings can only be confirmed through an examination in the clinic.
