Prof. Dr. Nazım Korkut

Prof. Dr. Nazım Korkut is an otorhinolaryngology specialist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) unit with a subspecialty in Robotic Surgery. His practice covers oncologic surgery of the head and neck, including oral, tongue and tongue-base and laryngeal cancer, as well as dysphagia and swallowing disorders, snoring, middle ear and cholesteatoma surgery, and nasal and sinus surgery. He has more than 45 years in medicine and consults in Turkish and English.

Dr. Korkut graduated from İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine in 1981 and completed his training in Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1988. He worked at the İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine Department of ENT Diseases from 1983 to 2011, first as a research assistant (1983–1988), then as a specialist physician (1988–1993) and as a faculty member. He became an associate professor in 1993 and a professor in 1999. His further training includes stays at Berlin Frei University, ENT Clinic (1997); Bordeaux University, Pellegrin Hopital, Portmann Ear Institute (1998); UCSF San Francisco, Skull Base Surgery (2001); and Würzburg University, ENT Clinic Cochlear Implant Center (2005). He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2008. He is a founding member of the Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Foundation, the Facial Plastic Surgery Association, the Laryngology Association and the European Association Otology and Neurootology, and a member of the Turkish Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery Association, the European Rhinologic Society and the American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, among others. His publications include work on lipoma of the cerebellopontine angle, management of jugular paragangliomas, and facial nerve surgery.

Clinical focus

A central part of Dr. Korkut’s work is oncologic surgery for cancers of the head and neck. This includes oral cancer, tongue and tongue-base cancer and laryngeal cancer. Where appropriate, he applies robotic surgery techniques, which are part of his subspecialty. He also evaluates and treats dysphagia and swallowing disorders, which may occur on their own or in connection with disease or previous treatment of the throat and larynx, and he sees patients with snoring.

In otology, his practice includes middle ear surgery and cholesteatoma surgery, supported by his training at the Portmann Ear Institute and the Cochlear Implant Center at Würzburg University. He also performs nasal and sinus surgery. Each case is assessed individually, and the choice between observation, medical treatment and surgery depends on the findings of the examination and the patient’s overall condition.

How Dr. Korkut works with international patients

Dr. Korkut consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before the visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior medical reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination of the ear, nose, throat and neck as relevant, and a discussion of the possible options.
