Prof. Öner Gülcan, MD

Prof. Öner Gülcan, MD is a cardiovascular surgeon in the Cardiovascular Surgery unit of Acibadem Adana Hospital in Adana. His work covers adult and pediatric cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery, robotic surgery and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. He has spent more than 34 years in medicine and has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2018.

Dr. Gülcan graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in 1992 and completed his training in cardiovascular surgery at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. He then worked in the İnönü University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular Surgery from 1999 to 2002. From 2003 he was based at the Başkent University Faculty of Medicine Department of Cardiovascular Surgery, where he held the title of Associate Professor Doctor from 2006 to 2013 and continued in the department until 2018. He is a member of the National Vascular Surgery Association and the Turkish Cardiovascular Surgery Association. His published work includes clinical studies and case reports on redo cardiac surgery, neurologic outcomes after coronary artery bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery and popliteal and femoral artery aneurysms, appearing in journals such as Journal of Vascular Surgery, Balkan Med J and Surg Today.

Clinical focus

Dr. Gülcan’s areas of expertise include aortic aneurysm, diseases of the great vessels, aortic valve stenosis and other forms of heart valve disease, cardiomyopathy and congenital heart disease, including pediatric cardiovascular surgery. In vascular surgery, he evaluates and treats peripheral arterial occlusion, renal artery stenosis and Buerger disease. His surgical practice also includes robotic bypass surgery.

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation is a further part of his clinical work, so patients who are assessed for cardiac or vascular surgery may also receive advice on rehabilitation. Whether a surgical, robotic or rehabilitation approach is appropriate depends on the individual condition, the findings on imaging and the patient’s overall health, and is discussed with the patient after a review of the available information. Not every patient is a candidate for every procedure, and the assessment is intended to clarify which options are realistic in a given case.

How Dr. Gülcan works with international patients

Dr. Gülcan speaks Turkish and English; interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, for example MRI, CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options.
