Prof. Dr. Orhan Baransu

Prof. Dr. Orhan Baransu is a dermatologist at Acibadem International Hospital in İstanbul, where he sees patients in the Dermatology unit. He has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 2007 and has spent more than 60 years in medicine, much of it in university dermatology departments. His clinical work covers common and chronic skin conditions, including acne, fungal and other skin infections, urticaria, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis, genital warts, and the monitoring and treatment of moles. He is a member of the Turkish Dermatology Association.

Dr. Baransu studied medicine at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine between 1966 and 1972. He joined İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine as an assistant in 1973 and trained in the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases, working there as a specialist physician from 1975 to 1978 and as an assistant associate professor from 1978 to 1982. He then moved to Dicle University Faculty of Medicine, where he became an associate professor in 1982 and worked in the Department of Dermatology until 1988. In 1988 he returned to İstanbul University İstanbul Faculty of Medicine as a professor in the Department of Dermatology, a position he held until 2003.

Clinical focus

A large part of Dr. Baransu’s practice involves inflammatory skin diseases. He assesses and treats acne, psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis, and urticaria. These conditions often follow a chronic or relapsing course, and treatment planning is based on the type and extent of the skin involvement, previous treatments and the patient’s overall health.

He also manages skin infections, with particular attention to fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, nail fungal infections and Candida infections, as well as genital warts. Another area of his work is the monitoring and mapping of moles, in which existing moles are documented and followed over time so that changes can be identified, and the treatment of moles where this is considered appropriate after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Baransu works with international patients

Dr. Baransu speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. The international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organizes the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing reports, imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination of the skin and a discussion of the options. Video consultations are available for international patients and may be used for an initial review of a skin condition or for follow-up after treatment; whether a video consultation is suitable depends on the individual case, and some conditions require in-person examination.
