Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Karakuş

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Alper Karakuş is a cardiologist in the Cardiology Department at Acibadem Atasehir Hospital in İstanbul. He has more than 16 years in medicine, with experience in cardiology practice, coronary intensive care and cardiology training roles. He is a member of the Turkish Cardiology Association and the European Cardiology Association.

Dr. Karakuş graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 2010. From 2010 to 2011 he worked in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit of Şehitkamil State Hospital in Gaziantep as part of his compulsory state service. He then completed his cardiology specialty training at Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital between 2011 and 2016. From 2016 to 2021 he served as a cardiology specialist at Besni State Hospital in Adıyaman, again within a compulsory state service obligation. In 2018 he obtained the European Cardiology Association Heart Failure Certificate, and in 2021 he received the European Cardiology Association Interventional Cardiology Certificate and was appointed Associate Professor of Cardiology. Between 2021 and 2024 he was Chief Assistant at Bursa Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital, and from 2022 to 2024 he also acted as Training Officer there. He joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services in 2024. He has co-authored peer-reviewed publications on topics including heart failure therapy, ST-elevation myocardial infarction, the assessment of intermediate coronary artery stenosis and access site complications of transfemoral diagnostic coronary procedures.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karakuş works across general and interventional cardiology. His areas of expertise include coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, angina and myocardial infarction. In this field he performs coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, including procedures for chronic total occlusion.

He also cares for patients with heart failure, hypertension, heart valve diseases and aortic stenosis, and his clinical interests include pacemakers and transcatheter aortic valve implantation. The choice of diagnostic and treatment options depends on the individual patient’s findings and is discussed with the patient after clinical assessment.

How Dr. Karakuş works with international patients

Dr. Karakuş speaks Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as echocardiography, angiography or other imaging reports, laboratory results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their case before or instead of traveling.
