Assoc. Prof. Bora Özveren, MD

Assoc. Prof. Bora Özveren, MD is a urologist at Acibadem Altunizade Hospital in İstanbul, where he works in the Urology unit. His subspecialty areas are the diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases and robotic surgery. He has more than 38 years in medicine and has been part of Acıbadem Healthcare Services since 1999.

Dr. Özveren studied at Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine between 1988 and 1995 and completed his urology training at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. In 1996 he was a Clinical Observer at Pittsburg University, and in 1999 he completed an Endourology Fellowship at Tel Aviv University. In 2002 he obtained the EBU Diploma of the European Board of Urology. He is a member of the European Association of Urology, the American Association of Urology, the Endoüroloji Association, the Türk Androloji Association, the Turkish Urology Association, the Endoürological Society and the Urological Surgery Association. His published work includes a step-by-step description of robot assisted radical prostatectomy technique, a study of simple renal cysts in a health screening cohort, case reports on complications of ureteral double-J stent placement and prostate biopsy, and a study of parental decision-making about newborn circumcision.

Clinical focus

Prostate disease is a central part of Dr. Özveren’s practice. He assesses and treats prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia, and his surgical work includes robotic and laparoscopic approaches. Which approach is considered depends on the individual diagnosis, the stage or extent of disease and the patient’s general health, and this is discussed with the patient before any decision is made.

His practice also covers kidney and urinary tract conditions, including kidney cancer, kidney stones, hydronephrosis and hematuria. For stone disease he performs minimally invasive stone surgery. In addition, he performs circumcision. Diagnostic evaluation, including review of imaging and laboratory findings, forms the basis for treatment planning in each of these areas.

How Dr. Özveren works with international patients

Dr. Özveren consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, arranges appointments and organises the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the available options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before travelling; whether a diagnosis or treatment plan can be established remotely depends on the condition and the information available, and in-person examination or further tests may still be required.
