Burcu Babaoğlu Karan, MD is a Pulmonary Medicine specialist at Acibadem Maslak Hospital in İstanbul, where she works in the Pulmonology unit. Her professional experience includes her specialization period at Istanbul Yedikule Chest Diseases and Chest Surgery Training and Research Hospital from 2023 to 2024 and work at Tunceli Devlet Hospital in 2024. In 2025 she joined Acıbadem Healthcare Services.

Clinical focus

Dr. Karan evaluates and manages a range of lung diseases. Her work covers acute and chronic airway conditions, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as lower respiratory tract infections. She also assesses patients with pulmonary embolism and pulmonary fibrosis. For each condition, the approach is based on the patient’s history, clinical examination, imaging and any previous treatment, and options are discussed with the patient in a cautious, individualized way.

A further part of her practice concerns lung nodules and lung cancer and other thoracic cancers. In this setting, she performs bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), procedures that allow the airways and nearby structures to be examined and, where appropriate, samples to be obtained for further assessment. Whether such a procedure is suitable depends on the individual case and is decided together with the patient after review of the available findings.

How Dr. Karan works with international patients

Dr. Karan consults in Turkish and English, and interpreters can be arranged for patients who speak other languages. Before a visit, the Acibadem international patient team coordinates the collection of prior reports and imaging, such as CT, X-ray or ultrasound reports, laboratory and pathology results, operative notes and discharge summaries, and arranges appointments and the hospital visit. A first consultation typically covers the patient’s history and symptoms, a review of existing imaging and previous treatments, a clinical examination and a discussion of the options. Video consultation is available for international patients who wish to discuss their situation before traveling or as part of follow-up, subject to the limits of remote assessment.
